Many families ask the same question after a pregnancy test turns positive: how many scans are needed, and in which month? The answer depends on whether the pregnancy is routine or high risk, but there is a basic schedule most patients hear about.

Early Pregnancy Scan

An early scan may be advised in the first trimester if there is:

  • uncertainty about dates
  • pain or bleeding
  • previous pregnancy loss
  • concern about location of pregnancy

This scan is often used to confirm the pregnancy is inside the uterus and to estimate the pregnancy age.

First Trimester Screening Window

Depending on the case, some patients are advised a first-trimester ultrasound around 10 to 13 weeks, especially when dating or screening is being planned.

Your doctor may combine this with blood tests depending on age, history, and pregnancy plan.

Mid-Pregnancy Anatomy Scan

The most commonly discussed routine scan is the detailed anomaly or anatomy scan, usually around 18 to 22 weeks. This is the scan many families think of as the “main pregnancy ultrasound.”

It is used to look at:

  • baby’s growth and position
  • heartbeat
  • placenta position
  • amniotic fluid
  • major structural development

Later Pregnancy Scans

Additional scans later in pregnancy are not always needed for every patient, but may be advised if:

  • growth needs monitoring
  • blood pressure is high
  • sugar is high
  • baby movements are reduced
  • placenta position needs follow-up
  • there is a twin or high-risk pregnancy

Why Your Schedule May Differ

Two women with the same due date may not get exactly the same scan schedule. That does not always mean something is wrong. It may simply reflect:

  • symptoms such as pain or bleeding
  • doctor preference based on history
  • high-risk pregnancy
  • need to recheck a previous finding

Do Not Use Ultrasound Dates Alone for Self-Diagnosis

Patients sometimes compare scan timing with friends and get anxious. Pregnancy care should be individualized. The important thing is not the number of scans alone, but whether they are being done for the right reason and at the right time.

When to Contact the Hospital Earlier

Please seek medical review if you have:

  • bleeding in pregnancy
  • severe abdominal pain
  • persistent vomiting with weakness
  • severe headache, swelling, blurred vision
  • reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy
