Dengue is common during monsoon and post-monsoon months, and many patients recover with monitoring, fluids, and supportive care. The danger is not every fever with dengue, but missing the warning signs that suggest the illness is becoming more serious.

Common Dengue Symptoms

Patients may have:

  • high fever
  • body pain
  • headache
  • weakness
  • nausea
  • rash in some cases

These symptoms alone do not always mean severe dengue.

Warning Signs That Need Medical Review

Please seek urgent review if dengue is suspected and the patient develops:

  • severe abdominal pain or tenderness
  • persistent vomiting
  • bleeding from gums, nose, vomit, or stool
  • unusual drowsiness, lethargy, or restlessness
  • reduced urine output
  • worsening weakness or dizziness

These warning signs matter even if the fever seems to be settling.

Why Patients Sometimes Get Worse After Fever Starts Falling

Families often assume that once fever comes down, the patient is improving. In dengue, this is not always true. The more critical phase can begin around the time fever starts settling. That is why warning signs, fluids, vitals, and repeat tests matter.

Do Not Use Platelet Count Alone

A falling platelet count can be important, but admission decisions are not made on one number alone. Doctors also assess:

  • hydration
  • blood pressure and pulse
  • bleeding
  • abdominal pain
  • vomiting
  • lab trends

Who Should Be Assessed Earlier

Special caution is needed in:

  • children
  • older adults
  • pregnant women
  • patients with diabetes, kidney disease, or other chronic illness

When Hospital Observation May Be Needed

If the patient cannot keep fluids down, has warning signs, appears dehydrated, or is becoming weaker, hospital observation or admission may be needed for safer monitoring.

Bottom Line

In dengue, warning signs are more important than fever alone. Do not wait at home if pain, vomiting, bleeding, or drowsiness begin.
