Appendix Surgery Recovery Time, Diet, and Rest: Surgeon Guide
Dr. Rajesh Kanungo explains appendix surgery healing time, food to eat and avoid, rest time, work, pain, and warning signs after appendectomy.
Appendix surgery is often done in an emergency, so families are anxious about what happens after the operation. In my OPD, the common questions are: How many days rest? What food can I eat? Is the pain normal? When can I go back to work?
This guide explains the usual recovery after appendectomy, especially laparoscopic appendix surgery.
If the Appendix Has Not Burst
When appendicitis is diagnosed early and the appendix has not ruptured, recovery is usually quick.
Most patients can expect:
- Walking within a few hours after surgery
- Liquids after the doctor allows
- Light food by the next day
- Discharge in 24-48 hours
- Return to routine activity in 5-7 days
There may be mild pain around the small cuts and some bloating for a few days.
If the Appendix Has Burst
Recovery is longer if the appendix has ruptured or there is pus/infection inside the abdomen.
The patient may need:
- Longer hospital stay
- IV antibiotics
- Drain placement in some cases
- Slower diet progression
- More frequent monitoring
This is why right lower abdominal pain with fever, vomiting, or worsening pain should not be ignored.
How Much Time Does Appendix Surgery Take?
In uncomplicated appendicitis, laparoscopic appendix surgery often takes about 30-60 minutes. If the appendix has burst, there is pus, or the intestine is stuck due to infection, the operation can take longer.
The total hospital time is not just operation time. It includes anaesthesia, recovery room observation, antibiotics, pain control, and making sure the patient can walk, pass urine, and tolerate food.
Diet After Appendix Surgery
Start only when your surgeon allows. In routine cases, diet usually progresses from liquids to soft food and then normal home food.
Good early options include:
- Water and clear fluids
- Khichdi or dalia
- Curd rice
- Banana
- Simple dal and rice
Avoid heavy, oily food for the first few days.
Foods Not to Eat After Appendix Surgery
For the first few days, avoid foods that cause gas, constipation, or vomiting:
- Fried snacks
- Very spicy food
- Heavy non-veg meals
- Carbonated drinks
- Alcohol
- Large portions of chana, rajma, or other gas-forming foods
Chicken, eggs, and other protein foods can usually be restarted gradually once digestion is comfortable and your surgeon allows it. Do not force heavy food on day one.
When Can I Return to Work?
For uncomplicated laparoscopic appendix surgery, desk work may restart in about 5-7 days if pain is controlled. Heavy work, gym, and abdominal strain should wait until your surgeon reviews you.
If the appendix had burst, recovery timelines are longer and must be individualized.
Can Appendix Be Cured Without Surgery?
Some selected early appendicitis cases may be managed with antibiotics in certain settings, but recurrence and missed worsening are concerns. In routine practice, confirmed appendicitis is commonly treated with appendectomy because delay can lead to rupture.
If pain is severe, shifting to the right lower abdomen, associated with fever or vomiting, do not try to manage it at home.
Warning Signs After Appendix Operation
Call your doctor if you notice:
- Fever
- Increasing abdominal pain
- Vomiting that does not stop
- Wound redness, swelling, or discharge
- Abdominal swelling
- Inability to pass stool or gas
These symptoms need review.
