Understanding Diabetes (Sugar Ki Bimari)
Diabetes mellitus, commonly called "sugar ki bimari" in Hindi, is a chronic condition where your body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels, which over time can damage blood vessels, nerves, and organs throughout the body.
India is often called the "diabetes capital of the world" with over 100 million diabetics. Bhopal, like other Indian cities, has seen a dramatic rise in diabetes due to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, stress, and genetic predisposition. Early diagnosis and proper management are essential to prevent serious complications.
At R.K. Hospital & Research Centre, Indrapuri, Bhopal, Dr. Mohit Sikka (MBBS, MD General Medicine) provides comprehensive diabetes management including diagnosis, blood sugar monitoring, medication, diet guidance, and complication screening — all under one roof.
Types of Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
An autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Requires lifelong insulin injections. Accounts for about 5-10% of all diabetes cases.
Type 2 Diabetes (Most Common)
The body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough. Most common type (90-95% of cases). Usually develops after age 30 but increasingly seen in younger people. Often linked to obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and family history. Can often be managed with lifestyle changes and oral medications initially.
Gestational Diabetes
Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery. Increases risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life. Requires careful monitoring during pregnancy. Our gynaecologists (Dr. Veena Pandey, Dr. Pooja Bansal) and Dr. Mohit Sikka collaborate for gestational diabetes management.
Pre-Diabetes
Blood sugar levels higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range (FBS 100-125 mg/dL, HbA1c 5.7-6.4%). This is the critical window where lifestyle changes can prevent progression to full diabetes. Early detection through regular testing is key.
Blood Sugar Testing at R.K. Hospital
Our in-house pathology lab (under Dr. Apoorva Tripathi, MBBS, MD) provides all diabetes-related blood tests with same-day results:
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
Measures blood glucose after 8-12 hours fasting. Normal: below 100 mg/dL.
Post-Prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS)
Measured 2 hours after meal. Normal: below 140 mg/dL.
Random Blood Sugar (RBS)
Blood sugar at any time. Useful for emergency screening. Normal: below 200 mg/dL.
HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)
3-month average blood sugar. Gold standard for diabetes monitoring. Target: below 7% for most diabetics.
Lipid Profile
Cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides. Important because diabetes increases heart disease risk.
Kidney Function Tests
Urea, creatinine, urine microalbumin. Diabetes can damage kidneys. Regular screening prevents complications.
Diabetes Treatment Approach at R.K. Hospital
Diet Management
Balanced diet with controlled carbohydrates, high fiber, adequate protein. Whole grains (roti, brown rice, oats), vegetables, dal, lean protein. Avoid sugar, sweets, maida, fruit juice, cold drinks. Small, frequent meals instead of large meals.
Exercise & Physical Activity
At least 30-45 minutes of moderate exercise (brisk walking, cycling, swimming) 5 days a week. Regular physical activity improves insulin sensitivity and helps control blood sugar. Even a 15-minute walk after meals significantly reduces post-meal blood sugar spikes.
Oral Medications
Dr. Mohit Sikka prescribes appropriate oral diabetes medications based on your blood sugar levels, HbA1c, kidney function, and other factors. Medications include metformin, sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, and SGLT2 inhibitors. Regular follow-up ensures optimal dosing.
Insulin Therapy (When Needed)
For Type 1 diabetes and advanced Type 2 diabetes where oral medications are insufficient. Dr. Sikka will explain insulin types, injection technique, and dosage adjustments. Insulin is not a sign of failure but an effective tool for blood sugar control.
Complication Screening
Regular screening for diabetes complications: kidney function tests (every 6-12 months), eye checkup (annually), foot examination, ECG, lipid profile. Early detection of complications allows timely intervention and prevention of serious damage.
