What Is PCOD / PCOS? (Mahila Hormonal Problem)

PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) / PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age. In India, it affects approximately 1 in 5 women. The condition occurs when the ovaries produce excess male hormones (androgens), leading to irregular periods, difficulty in ovulation, and the formation of small fluid-filled cysts on the ovaries.

At R.K. Hospital & Research Centre, Indrapuri, Bhopal, we provide comprehensive PCOD/PCOS care with experienced gynaecologists Dr. Veena Pandey (MBBS, DGO) and Dr. Pooja Bansal (MBBS, MS). Our hospital has complete on-site diagnostic facilities including blood tests (pathology lab by Dr. Apoorva Tripathi, MBBS, MD) and ultrasonography (by Dr. Ishant Jatav, MBBS, MD) — so you get diagnosis and treatment all under one roof without running between multiple centers.

Symptoms of PCOD / PCOS

Irregular Periods

Periods that come too early, too late, too heavy, or are missed altogether. The most common symptom.

Excessive Hair Growth

Unwanted hair on face, chin, chest, or abdomen (hirsutism) due to excess androgens.

Acne & Oily Skin

Persistent acne on face, chest, and back that does not respond to regular skincare.

Weight Gain

Unexplained weight gain, especially around the abdomen. Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise.

Hair Thinning

Thinning of hair on the scalp, similar to male-pattern baldness.

Dark Skin Patches

Dark, velvety patches on neck, armpits, or groin (acanthosis nigricans), linked to insulin resistance.

Difficulty Getting Pregnant

Irregular or absent ovulation makes it difficult to conceive naturally.

Mood Changes

Mood swings, anxiety, and depression are common in women with PCOD/PCOS.

How PCOD / PCOS Is Diagnosed at R.K. Hospital

1. Clinical Examination

Our gynaecologist (Dr. Veena Pandey or Dr. Pooja Bansal) will take your detailed medical history, menstrual history, and perform a physical examination including checking for signs of excess androgen (acne, hirsutism, hair thinning).

2. Blood Tests (On-Site)

Hormonal profile: LH, FSH, testosterone, DHEAS, thyroid (TSH, T3, T4), prolactin, insulin levels. Also: fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, lipid profile. All tests done at our in-house pathology lab under Dr. Apoorva Tripathi (MBBS, MD Pathology).

3. Pelvic Ultrasound / Sonography (On-Site)

Pelvic ultrasound to examine ovaries for polycystic appearance (12+ follicles in each ovary or ovarian volume greater than 10 ml). Performed by Dr. Ishant Jatav (MBBS, MD Radiology) using our ultrasonography equipment.

All under one roof: No need to visit multiple labs or clinics. At R.K. Hospital, you get consultation, blood tests, and ultrasound in a single visit.

PCOD / PCOS Treatment Options

Lifestyle Modifications (Most Important)

Weight loss of even 5-10% can significantly improve symptoms. Regular exercise (30-45 minutes daily walking, yoga, or cycling), balanced diet rich in fiber and protein, reduced sugar and refined carbs, adequate sleep, and stress management. Lifestyle changes are the foundation of PCOD treatment.

Hormonal Medication

Oral contraceptive pills to regulate periods and reduce androgen levels. Anti-androgen medications for acne and hirsutism. Progesterone supplements to induce regular periods. Medication is prescribed based on your specific symptoms and goals.

Insulin Sensitizers

Metformin may be prescribed if insulin resistance is present (common in PCOD). It helps improve insulin sensitivity, can aid in weight loss, and may help restore regular ovulation.

Fertility Treatment (If Trying to Conceive)

Ovulation-inducing medications (clomiphene, letrozole) to help you ovulate and conceive. Our gynaecologists will monitor your cycle with ultrasound and guide you through the process.

Surgical Option (Rare Cases)

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling may be considered for women who do not respond to medications. This minimally invasive procedure can restore ovulation. Dr. Rajesh Kanungo (MBBS, MS, FIAGES, FMAS) can perform this procedure if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions — PCOD / PCOS Treatment

What is the difference between PCOD and PCOS?
PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) are often used interchangeably, but they are slightly different. PCOD is a condition where ovaries produce many immature eggs that form cysts. It is more common and can often be managed with lifestyle changes. PCOS is a metabolic disorder with hormonal imbalance (excess androgens) that affects the entire body. PCOS is more severe and may require long-term treatment. Both conditions are treated at R.K. Hospital by our experienced gynaecologists.
What are the symptoms of PCOD/PCOS?
Common symptoms include: irregular periods (mahina aana-jaana), heavy or prolonged periods, acne and oily skin, excessive facial/body hair (hirsutism), hair thinning on scalp, weight gain (especially around abdomen), difficulty losing weight, dark patches on skin (acanthosis nigricans), difficulty getting pregnant, and mood swings/depression. If you have 2 or more of these symptoms, consult our gynaecologists at R.K. Hospital for evaluation.
How is PCOD/PCOS diagnosed?
At R.K. Hospital, PCOD/PCOS is diagnosed through: (1) Clinical history and examination by our gynaecologist, (2) Blood tests including hormonal profile (LH, FSH, testosterone, DHEAS, thyroid TSH, prolactin, insulin), blood sugar, and lipid profile - done at our pathology lab by Dr. Apoorva Tripathi (MBBS, MD), (3) Pelvic ultrasound/sonography to check ovaries for cysts - done by Dr. Ishant Jatav (MBBS, MD Radiology). All diagnostic facilities are available under one roof.
Can PCOD be cured completely?
PCOD cannot be "cured" in the traditional sense, but it can be effectively managed with proper treatment so that symptoms are controlled and long-term complications are prevented. Many women with PCOD lead completely normal lives with regular periods, healthy weight, clear skin, and successful pregnancies through a combination of lifestyle changes, medication, and regular monitoring. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are key.
Which doctors treat PCOD at R.K. Hospital?
PCOD/PCOS is treated by our experienced gynaecologists: Dr. Veena Pandey (MBBS, DGO) and Dr. Pooja Bansal (MBBS, MS). Both are experienced in diagnosing and managing PCOD/PCOS, irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, and fertility issues. They provide compassionate, private consultations for women of all ages. Does PCOD affect pregnancy?
PCOD/PCOS is one of the leading causes of difficulty in getting pregnant (infertility) because it affects ovulation. However, many women with PCOD successfully conceive with proper treatment. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications (weight loss can restore ovulation), ovulation-inducing medications (like clomiphene or letrozole), hormonal treatment, and in some cases, laparoscopic ovarian drilling. Our gynaecologists will create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific situation.
