Gallbladder Stone Emergency Signs: When Pain Should Not Be Ignored

Right upper stomach pain, fever, vomiting, and jaundice can be warning signs of gallbladder stone complications. Know when to call a surgeon.

By Dr. Rajesh Kanungo

Gallbladder stone pain is often mistaken for gas or acidity. Some patients take antacids for months before they finally get an ultrasound.

But gallstones can sometimes create emergencies. Knowing the warning signs helps you avoid dangerous delay.

Typical Gallbladder Stone Pain

Gallbladder pain usually comes in the upper right side of the abdomen, especially after oily or heavy food.

It may:

  • Spread to the right shoulder or back
  • Come with nausea or vomiting
  • Last 30 minutes to several hours
  • Repeat after fatty meals
  • Feel like severe acidity but not improve with usual acidity medicine

If this pattern repeats, an ultrasound is usually needed.

Emergency Warning Signs

Do not wait at home if pain is severe or comes with:

  • Fever or chills
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Yellow eyes or yellow urine
  • Severe pain lasting more than 6 hours
  • Weakness, sweating, or low blood pressure
  • Pain with high blood sugar in diabetic patients

These signs can suggest acute cholecystitis, bile duct blockage, pancreatitis, or infection.

Can Gallbladder Stones Be Treated With Medicine?

In most symptomatic patients, tablets do not reliably dissolve gallstones. Pain attacks often repeat, and complications can happen without warning.

If gallstones are causing symptoms, laparoscopic gallbladder removal is commonly advised. The gallbladder is removed because it is the organ forming stones and causing attacks.

What Is Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is gallbladder removal through small cuts using a camera. Most uncomplicated surgeries take about 30-60 minutes. Many patients walk the same day and go home the same day or next morning.

Recovery is usually faster than open surgery, but emergency infected gallbladders can be more difficult than planned operations.

Why Early Consultation Matters

A planned gallbladder surgery after proper evaluation is usually safer than waiting until fever, jaundice, or pancreatitis develops.

At R.K. Hospital, Indrapuri, Dr. Rajesh Kanungo evaluates gallbladder stone patients with clinical examination, ultrasound reports, liver function tests, and fitness for laparoscopic surgery.
