ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube in one hour. When there is inflammation or infection in the body, certain proteins make red cells clump and fall faster, so ESR rises. ESR is a non-specific test — it tells the doctor that something is going on, but not exactly what. What is the normal ESR level?
Normal ESR (Westergren method) is 0–15 mm/hr for men and 0–20 mm/hr for women under 50. Above 50 years, up to 20 (men) and 30 (women) is acceptable. For children, normal ESR is 0–10 mm/hr.
ESR 30, 40, or 50 — kya matlab hai?
ESR 30–50 mm/hr is mildly to moderately raised. Common causes are infection, anaemia, arthritis, or recent illness. In women over 50 and in pregnancy, ESR up to 30–40 can be normal. It does not confirm any disease by itself — your doctor will correlate with CRP, CBC, and symptoms.
What does ESR above 100 mean?
ESR above 100 mm/hr is significantly high and usually points to a serious cause — active tuberculosis, deep infection or abscess, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, or vasculitis. It needs prompt evaluation with further tests such as chest X-ray, CRP, protein electrophoresis, or imaging.
Is high ESR a sign of cancer?
Not usually. Most raised ESR results are due to infection, inflammation, or anaemia. However, a very high ESR (above 100) with weight loss, bone pain, or abnormal blood counts may need cancer screening. High ESR alone is never a diagnosis of cancer.
