What is Uric Acid Test?
Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines — natural substances found in foods like red meat, organ meat, seafood, dal, and beer. Normally the kidneys remove uric acid through urine. When the body makes too much or the kidneys remove too little, uric acid builds up in the blood (hyperuricaemia). High uric acid can form sharp crystals in joints, causing gout — sudden, severe pain and swelling, most often in the big toe — and in the kidneys, causing uric acid stones. The serum uric acid test is a simple blood test, usually part of a kidney function test (KFT) panel.

Uric acid above 9–10 mg/dL, or any level with gout attacks or kidney stones, usually needs medicine such as allopurinol or febuxostat.
What foods increase uric acid?
Red meat, liver and kidney (organ meats), seafood (prawns, sardines), beer and alcohol, sugary drinks with fructose, and very large portions of dal, rajma, chana, mushrooms, and spinach. Drinking 2.5–3 litres of water daily helps the kidneys flush out uric acid.
Can high uric acid cause kidney damage?
Yes. Persistently high uric acid can cause uric acid kidney stones and, over years, chronic kidney disease. It is also linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. Controlling uric acid protects the kidneys.
