A Kidney Function Test (KFT), also called Renal Function Test (RFT), is a group of blood tests that evaluate how well the kidneys are working. It measures waste products and minerals that the kidneys are responsible for filtering.
KFT includes parameters like serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), and sometimes calcium and phosphorus. It is essential for patients with diabetes, hypertension, or kidney disease.
Fasting for 8-10 hours is recommended for accurate results, especially for blood urea and certain electrolyte levels.
Normal serum creatinine is 0.7-1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.6-1.1 mg/dL for women. Higher levels may indicate reduced kidney function, but should be interpreted by a doctor in clinical context.
