Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin — the fold of skin covering the tip (glans) of the penis. It may be performed for medical reasons such as phimosis (tight foreskin that cannot be retracted), recurrent infections (balanitis), or paraphimosis, as well as for religious or personal reasons. Who Needs Circumcision Surgery?

How to Prepare

1. 1A physical examination by the surgeon to assess the foreskin condition and determine the most suitable technique
2. 2Basic blood tests including complete blood count, blood sugar, and coagulation profile
3. 3Inform the doctor about any allergies, medications, or bleeding disorders
4. 4The area will be shaved and cleaned before surgery; you may be asked to do this at home the night before
5. 5Fast for 4–6 hours before the procedure if general or spinal anaesthesia is planned; local anaesthesia cases may not require fasting

What Happens During the Procedure

1. 1The area is cleaned with antiseptic solution and local anaesthesia is administered at the base of the penis (dorsal penile nerve block)
2. 2In conventional method: the foreskin is marked, separated from the glans, and excised; bleeding points are cauterised and the skin edges are sutured
3. 3In stapler method: a disposable circumcision stapler device is placed, which simultaneously cuts the foreskin and places a ring of small staples for haemostasis
4. 4The wound is inspected for any bleeding and a light dressing is applied
5. 5The entire procedure takes approximately 15–30 minutes depending on the technique used

Recovery & Aftercare

• ✓Most patients go home the same day (day-care procedure) with oral pain medication and antibiotics
• ✓Keep the area clean and dry; change the dressing as instructed by the surgeon for the first 3–5 days
• ✓Mild swelling and discomfort are normal for 3–7 days and are managed with prescribed painkillers
• ✓Avoid strenuous activities, cycling, and heavy lifting for 2 weeks after surgery
• ✓The wound typically heals completely within 2–3 weeks; staples (if used) fall off on their own in 7–14 days
• ✓Refrain from sexual activity for 4–6 weeks or until the surgeon confirms full healing
